How To Waterproof A Basement

There is more than one way to waterproof a cellar or basement. Various systems, products, and manufactures. Our surveyor will discuss your requirements and then provide an effective solution to ensure you achieve the desired result, a dry, usable space that adds value to your home.

Following BS8102: 2022

When a wall is below or partially below ground, they are retaining earth. It’s the moisture (Water) within the earth that makes its way through into your basement. The most common area of failure on retro fit basements is typically the wall floor joint. BS 8102 2022 is the code of practice for protection of below ground structures against water ingress. DAMPX follow this specific British Standard when installing basement waterproofing solutions.

Type A, B & C systems

Basement waterproofing systems are typically categorised into three systems. Type A (Barrier protection), Type B (Structurally integral protection), Type C (Drained protection). To achieve the desired environment, it’s imperative the correct system is used. In cases of high risk combined protection should be considered. Like most things in life there are pros and cons to each system. Our surveyors will discuss and recommend the appropriate protection for your needs.

Planning & Building control

Subject to what you’re trying to achieve with your basement, planning and building control maybe required. Due to basements being below ground, unless you’re planning to have exterior access, new windows or door openings planning isn’t typically required. Converting your cellar/basement to habitable use will require building control approval.
